How would you feel about contributing to bringing together anthropology and design? If you have a PhD and the idea of human-centered design appeals to you, the Department of Anthropology at the New School for Social Research invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the Assistant or Associate level to begin August 2017. The New School has been at the forefront of important initiatives that bring together social science and design practices. Drawing on the combined strengths of The New School for Social Research and Parsons School of Design, the University has recently launched a series of programs, including The Graduate Institute for Design, Ethnography & Social Thought (GIDEST), the Program in Transdisciplinary Design, the Center for Transformative Media, and the Institute for Critical Social Inquiry, all of which expand and deepen the university’s commitment to transforming the relationship between design, the arts, and technology. As part of this effort, the Department of Anthropology is seeking to hire an Assistant or Associate Professor to work alongside existing faculty to develop and subsequently lead out a new certificate program at the Masters level in Anthropology and critical approaches to Design. Students in the program will work across and between the NSSR and Parsons, developing projects that address both practical and theoretical problems of wide concern, drawing on the expertise of current faculty and of programs in both divisions.
